Frequently Asked Questions

New to Predators hockey? Been a fan for years but have questions? Here are answers to the most commonly asked questions about the Nashville Predators.

Team Basics

When did the Nashville Predators join the NHL?

The Predators were awarded an NHL franchise on June 25, 1997, and played their first game on October 10, 1998. They were an expansion team and have been based in Nashville since their inception.

Why are they called the Predators?

The name comes from a saber-toothed tiger fossil discovered during excavation in downtown Nashville. The saber-toothed cat was a fierce predator that once roamed the Tennessee area, making it a fitting name for the team.

Who is the team captain?

Roman Josi (#59) is the current captain, a position he's held since 2017. The Swiss-born defenseman won the Norris Trophy in 2020 and is one of the best blueliners in the NHL.

What division are the Predators in?

The Predators play in the Central Division of the Western Conference. Division rivals include the Colorado Avalanche, Dallas Stars, Minnesota Wild, St. Louis Blues, Winnipeg Jets, Arizona Coyotes, and Chicago Blackhawks.

Have the Predators ever won the Stanley Cup?

Not yet. The Predators reached the Stanley Cup Final for the first time in 2017, losing to the Pittsburgh Penguins in six games. They won the Presidents' Trophy in 2018 for the best regular season record but were eliminated in the second round of the playoffs.

Game Day & Tickets

Where do the Predators play home games?

Bridgestone Arena, located at 501 Broadway in downtown Nashville. The arena opened in 1996 and holds approximately 17,159 fans for hockey games. It's right on Lower Broadway, making it one of the best locations in the NHL.

How much do tickets cost?

Ticket prices vary based on opponent, day of week, and seat location:

  • Upper bowl (300 level): $30-$100
  • Club level (200 level): $100-$250
  • Lower bowl (100 level): $150-$400+
  • Playoff games: Prices increase significantly

Buy from the official team site (nhl.com/predators/tickets) or verified resellers like Ticketmaster, StubHub, or SeatGeek.

What time do doors open?

Doors typically open 1 hour before puck drop for regular season games, and 1.5 hours before for playoff games. Arriving early lets you watch warmups and beat the crowds at concessions.

Can I bring a bag to the arena?

Bridgestone Arena has a clear bag policy. Bags must be clear plastic and no larger than 12" x 12" x 6". Small clutch purses (no larger than 4.5" x 6.5") are also allowed. All bags are subject to search.

Fan Traditions

What is "Smashville"?

"Smashville" is the nickname for Nashville's hockey culture and fanbase. It combines "smash" (representing the physical nature of hockey) with "Nashville." The term became widely popular during the 2017 Stanley Cup run when the Predators' electric atmosphere gained national attention.

Why do fans throw catfish on the ice?

The catfish tradition started as a response to Detroit Red Wings fans throwing octopuses. Since catfish are abundant in Tennessee rivers, Preds fans adopted the catfish as their symbol. Fans sneak catfish into the arena (not easy!) and throw them on the ice during big moments, especially in the playoffs. Note: This is technically against arena rules and can result in ejection!

What is the goalie chant?

After the Predators score, fans chant at the opposing goalie:

"[Goalie's name]! [Goalie's name]! [Goalie's name]! You suck! It's all your fault! It's all your fault! It's all your fault!"

This tradition has become famous (and infamous) around the NHL. Love it or hate it, it's uniquely Nashville.

Who is Gnash?

Gnash is the Predators' mascot, a saber-toothed cat. He's been with the team since their inaugural season in 1998. Gnash is known for his energy, rappelling from the arena rafters, and entertaining fans throughout the game.
